About This Call
NJ Transit and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts seek five visual artists to create work for the TRANSITional Art Project at the Trenton Transit Station, taking place in Summer 2021 as part of the "Stepping into Tomorrow" public art event. Selected artists' 2D artwork will be printed on vinyl banners for display on either the Rail Terminal or the Light Rail Station area.
Eligibility: Artists must be at least 18 years old, legally able to complete a contract with NJ Transit, and live or work in Central New Jersey (Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Union, and Hunterdon counties). All team members must be current residents of New Jersey. Preference will be given to artists with a strong connection to Trenton. Artists must be able to work collaboratively with the NJ Transit Arts Team to develop their initial image into a final reproducible design. All 2D media appropriate to the project will be considered. Work must be appropriate for public display and will not include images depicting violence, nudity, or sexual content. Artists must consider that work will be displayed in a public location and subject to the elements and potential vandalism.
Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend per artist/team, which can be used toward project costs, travel, digital services, storage media, and artistic fees. NJ Transit will manage the logistics of printing and installing the banners. Submissions should include 4-8 digital images of existing, completed 2D work, an artist statement (approximately 250 words), and a brief artist bio. The selection committee will evaluate proposals based on artistic excellence, potential for positive experiences with the work by NJ Transit riders and the local community, and feasibility of duplicating the work as a banner. Decisions will be announced by the end of April. For questions about the space, project, or program, contact Christine Blanco at [email protected] or 973-491-8243.
