About This Call
The TRANSITional Art Project seeks to select one visual artist or artist team to design vinyl coverings for the glass roof and walls of the Summit Train Station waiting area and stairs. The selected artist must live or work in Northern New Jersey counties (Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Warren, or Union County) and be a current resident of New Jersey. Preferential consideration will be given to artists with a strong connection to the Summit community.
The selected artist will receive a $10,000 stipend to cover project costs, travel, supplies, digital media, and artistic fees. Artist teams must allocate fees among members from the total budget. NJ Transit will work with the selected artist to approve a final design for digital submission and will undertake fabrication and installation on vinyl. The project will be unveiled in September 2024 and remain on view throughout the Fall. Designs should allow light through and be vibrant and cheerful. Artists must consider that work will be displayed in a public location, subject to the elements and potential vandalism, and must not include images depicting violence, nudity, or sexual content.
Applications must include: a 1,000 character artist statement (approximately 250 words) mentioning any connection to Summit; a brief artist bio (no more than 300 words); four to eight digital images of existing completed artwork; and a brief narrative describing the proposed design (no more than 2 pages). The NJ Transit TRANSITional Art Selection Committee will review applications based on artistic excellence, experience demonstrated by work samples and biography, potential for positive community interaction, and feasibility and durability of the proposed design. Artist notifications will be made no later than June 28, 2024, with installation occurring mid-July through August 2024. All submissions must be made through www.callforentry.org (CAFE).
