TRANSITional Art Project: Rahway Rail Station Photography Exhibition

NJ TRANSIT and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are soliciting submissions from photographers for the TRANSITional Art Project: Rahway Rail Station Photography Exhibition. This call seeks images to be exhibited as part of a temporary art installation at the Rahway Rail Station, located at 1 Billings Place in Rahway, New Jersey. The exhibition will be unveiled in September 2025 and remain on view throughout the Fall. Submissions are only accepted from artists who are current residents of New Jersey living in one of the State's central counties: Union, Somerset, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, or Hunterdon Counties. Preferential consideration will be given to artists with a strong connection to the Rahway community.

Artists are invited to explore the past, present, and future of Rahway's industrial roots and the innovative spirit that continues to shape its identity. Two artists will be selected and each will receive a $2,500 stipend for approved digital submissions. NJ TRANSIT will provide the fabrication and installation of the artworks. This is a design-only call; selected artists will work with NJ TRANSIT to develop and provide an approved digital design for printing on vinyl. Artwork must be appropriate for public display and will not include images depicting violence, nudity, or sexual content. Artists must work in a timely fashion with the NJ TRANSIT team and be able to complete final design iterations within 4-6 weeks after notification of selection.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Submissions must include 4-8 images of previously completed artwork (1 optional video), a brief artist statement, a current artist bio (250 words or less), and a brief narrative proposal (no more than 2 pages) describing the design idea and specifications. The Selection Committee will evaluate proposals based on artistic quality, appropriateness to the site and project objectives, permanence and durability, absence of public hazards, innovation in materials and techniques, willingness to collaborate with the project team, and ability to meet the established timeframe.
