About This Call

NJ TRANSIT and the NJ State Council on the Arts invite artists to submit proposals for digital art installations at the New Brunswick Rail Station. The station, built in 1903 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, serves as an intermodal transportation hub accommodating NJ TRANSIT Rail and AMTRAK passengers, local and regional buses, Rutgers University shuttles, and cyclists.

Art installations will be placed in three locations: interior tunnel walls (available for vinyl or cintra panels spanning the length of the walls), interior waiting room (six overhead panels for vinyl print), and a bus shelter on Somerset Street (vinyl application). Artists should submit 2-10 examples of previously completed work (digital images and/or video acceptable) and a brief narrative (no more than 2 pages) discussing their vision for the artwork within the context of the available sites, their past experience as an artist, and any connection to the New Brunswick community. This call does not consider moving images (films, animations) or performative work.

Eligibility: Artists/artist teams must be at least 21 years old, legally able to contract with NJ Transit, live in Central New Jersey (Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Somerset, Union, and Hunterdon counties), and be current New Jersey residents. Preference given to artists with strong connections to New Brunswick. Selected artists must be available to complete installation by August 2022. The selection committee will evaluate proposals based on artistic quality, appropriateness to site and project objectives, potential for positive community interaction, and willingness to collaborate with the project team. Selected artists will receive a $1,200 stipend per artist or artist team. The exhibit runs September through November 2022. Submission deadline: April 12, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
