About This Call
The Walter Rand Transportation Center (WRTC) is a transportation hub located at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Broadway in Camden, New Jersey, serving NJ TRANSIT Buses and the RiverLINE Light Rail. This call seeks submissions from two (2) artists or artist teams for visual artwork to be printed on vinyl banners and installed on platform lamp posts at the Light Rail Inbound Platform (5 lampposts, 10 total banners) and Light Rail Outbound Platform (5 lampposts, 10 total banners).
Artists may submit images of completed works or a brief description with supporting images describing a conceptual approach. Selected artists will provide digital files for large-format printing, which NJ Transit will work with them to ensure proper size, type, and quality. Artists are encouraged to consider the ridership and public nature of transit spaces and how their artwork relates to the place and scale of the site locations. Accepted formats include drawing, graphics, mixed media, painting, photography, and other non-moving art forms that can be represented digitally. The call will not consider moving images, films, animations, or performative work. Content must be appropriate for a public setting and original work only.
Eligibility: Artists/artist teams must be at least 21 years old, legally able to complete a contract with NJ Transit, live in Camden County, and be current New Jersey residents. Preference will be given to artists with a strong connection to Camden. Submit 4-10 work samples (digital images and/or short videos), a required artist statement discussing relevant experience and interest in the project, and an optional narrative (no more than 2 pages) describing your vision for the artwork within the available sites. The selection committee will evaluate artistic quality, appropriateness to the site and project objectives, potential for positive community interaction, and artist availability to coordinate with the project team. Selected artists will receive a $1,500 stipend to be used toward project costs and artistic fees. Final approved digital art should be submitted in .ai file format.
