Transcending the West: Juried by Rose Fredrick

"Transcending the West" is a national juried exhibition exploring work by artists who challenge traditional Western art tropes. The exhibition seeks artists employing unusual materials and unique voices to investigate both the history of the West and contemporary issues, with particular interest in work by BIPOC, AAPI, and LGBTQ+ artists that defies romanticized versions of manifest destiny, cowboys, horses, and dusty landscapes.

Juror Rose Fredrick is a curator, writer, and strategist who has spent three decades producing exhibitions that have raised funds for scholarships and education while launching artists' careers. Her writing has appeared in Western Art & Architecture, 5280 Denver's Magazine, Ovation, Southwest Art, ArtRevue, and Breckenridge Magazine. She has won the National Endowment for the Arts grant, Rock West Curator of the Year, and other honors.

Eligible media include painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media, fibers, metals, woodworking, ceramics, glass, and sculpture. Artists age 18+ are encouraged to apply. Ineligible work includes decorated furniture, giclee prints of original work and not an edition, candles, pressed flowers, handmade reproductions, and objects made from commercial kits or commercially available plans. Entry fee is $40. Submit 1-6 images with an artist statement (under 100 words) explaining how your work aligns with the call. Drop-off and delivery deadline is October 7, 2022. Show dates are October 14 - December 23. Notifications will be sent by September 16, 2022. Artist/Juror Talk is November 5th at 3pm (in person and via video conference). Pick up is by January 3, 2023.
