About This Call
The City of Alexandria, Virginia invites artists and artist teams residing in Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee to submit qualifications for the Traffic Control Box Vinyl Wrap Public Art Project.
Up to three artists will be selected to design vinyl wraps for twelve traffic control boxes located in the West End of Alexandria. The wraps will cover all four sides and the top of each box. Artists are encouraged to use a variety of media, such as photography, painting, collage, and digital imagery to develop their designs. Selected artists will be required to submit final designs at full-scale in digital format such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign or a combination of the three. The City will be responsible for printing and installation.
Artist Eligibility: Artists must be 18 years or older and reside in the specified region. Artists who have not made public art are encouraged to apply if they have at least five years of experience as a professional working artist as evidenced by their exhibition record, critical reviews, honors, and awards.
Honorarium: Chosen artists will be paid $4,000 to create four original designs that will be digitally transferred to vinyl sheets and wrapped around four assigned traffic control boxes.
Timeline: Applications due February 14, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Artist finalists notified February 17. Drafts due March 13. Artwork due April 10. Wraps installed May 9-15. Unveiling after May 15, coinciding with National Public Works Week.
Application Requirements: Artist statement, letter of interest, resume, and six images (maximum two videos). Selected artists must sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Alexandria. Questions should be directed to Matthew Harwood, Public Art Manager, at [email protected].
