About This Call
The Town of Windsor is soliciting public art entries of existing sculptures for an outdoor, temporary installation (24-36 months) in a new traffic roundabout located at Windsor Road and Old Redwood Highway. The roundabout is a gateway to downtown Windsor in Sonoma County, adjacent to a new upscale shopping center, a 387-unit residential development, the Sonoma County Library, Town Civic Center, and the Windsor Town Green.
The theme is "Art is at the Heart of the Community" and should represent the essence of the Windsor community and its cultural relevance to the region. Special consideration will be given to art incorporating kinetic elements including wind, solar, and kinetic mediums. Sculptures must be existing works (no conceptual designs), fit on a 20-foot diameter concrete base foundation, be substantially fabricated and safe for outdoor conditions, and have appropriate scale and proportion for a vehicle roundabout. Artists are encouraged to consult a structural engineer. The selected artist will receive a $2,500 stipend after successful installation and will be responsible for all transportation, delivery, and removal costs. The Town will cover placement and installation costs. Temporary plaques will be included with each installation. Sculptures may be offered for purchase, with the Town retaining 15% of sales for future public art projects.
Submissions must include a one-page letter of interest describing how the work relates to the theme, one professional reference, up to six images and one video (60 seconds or less) per sculpture showing front, back, and installation requirements, and a $10 submission fee per sculpture. The Public Art Advisory Committee will review submissions and select a finalist and alternate based on artistic merit, experience in public spaces, appropriate scale, track record, availability, and creative interpretation of the theme. The Town Council will make final selection. Installation is scheduled for October/November 2016, with the art displayed November 2016 through November 2018. Submission deadline: July 29, 2016, 11:59 p.m. MDT. Contact: Olivia Lemen, [email protected], 707-838-5383.
