About This Call

The Town of Westlake announces its inaugural Public Art Competition open to all artists who work in any form of outdoor art. The competition seeks to facilitate exemplary public art that can influence the future form of the Town and distinguish Westlake through the merger of place and art.

The site for this competition is located at the northwest corner of Davis Boulevard (FM 1938) and Dove Road in Westlake, Texas, the most prominent intersection within the Town. The site encompasses a large L-shaped area of ground that includes a shallow runoff stream, which can flood up the stream banks for up to 48 hours during rare times of very heavy rain. The artwork desired must engage and inspire residents, visitors, and employees of all ages, becoming an attraction known for its dynamic beauty and significance.

Selected artists will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and overseeing the installation of a permanent work; taking advantage of the site's intrinsic qualities and relationship to the Town; creatively interpreting the site in ways that engage the public; becoming familiar with the site and Town before undertaking a design proposal; providing maintenance instructions; and performing a follow-up review after one year. The artist selection process consists of three stages: evaluation of responses to the Request for Qualifications (RFQ), submission of proposals with budget tiers of $450,000, $600,000, or $850,000, and selection of a finalist. Semi-finalists will receive a $5,000 honorarium, and the selected finalist will receive a $10,000 honorarium for further development. Each work will be funded through a separate funding campaign. Responses to the RFQ are due by January 31, 2019. All questions must be submitted via email to [email protected].
