About This Call
The Town of Silverthorne invites artists to submit proposals for a public art commission at Rivers Edge Park, which serves as an entrance to the community adjacent to the Blue River. The artwork is intended to welcome visitors while drawing attention to the river and inspire passersby to experience it firsthand.
Artists are invited to consider themes celebrating Silverthorne's essence, whether past, present, or future. Both representational and contemporary art are welcome, including kinetic pieces or works incorporating light and/or sound. Use of alternative energy such as solar is encouraged. The Committee seeks a unique, visually impactful piece that draws attention rather than blends in. The piece will be visible from all angles with 360° visibility important. The installation space is located approximately 3 feet below street level. Budget: $75,000-$125,000.
All applicants must consider long-term conservation and maintenance. Projects should use highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for Silverthorne's high altitude climate with severe weather conditions, including an average annual snowfall of 75 inches. Finalists will be encouraged to consult with a professional conservator. Applicants must submit 3-6 images. Entry fee: $25 (non-refundable). Selection will be made by the Art in Public Places Committee, with final approval by Silverthorne Town Council and Mayor. Notification of finalists: March 28. Commissions due: May 9. Anticipated installation: end of 2013. Questions accepted until noon on March 5, 2013.
