About This Call

The Town of Danville seeks professional artists or art teams for a commissioned mural artwork to be installed in the rotunda of the Town's new office space at 500 La Gonda Way, Danville, CA 94526. The work will consist of three large stretched canvases measuring approximately 8 feet high by 8 feet wide by 3 inches deep each, forming an 8 by 24 foot triptych. Artists should submit 3-6 JPEG images of original artwork for consideration.

Eligibility is open to professional artists or art teams residing in the nine San Francisco Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma). Applicants must have successfully managed and completed at least one publicly funded art commission on schedule and within budget. The artwork should represent the Town in a clean, contemporary artistic style while celebrating Danville's landscape, history, and heritage. Themes to consider include natural beauty, rich history, Native Americans of the San Ramon Valley (the Tatcan Tribe), the railway, western town/farming heritage, oak trees and hills, regional parks, Mount Diablo State Park, and playwright Eugene O'Neill's legacy. Visual imagery must be appropriate for all audiences and cannot contain advertising, partisan politics, sexual, or religious content.

The selected artist(s) will receive an honorarium of up to $5,000 per canvas plus the cost of materials such as canvas and stretcher bars. Payment will be 50% upon awarding of the commission and 50% upon project completion. The artist is responsible for using their own materials and studio space. The Town will handle installation. Application deadline is September 30, 2021. Applicants must submit a letter of interest, current resume, color scale rendering of proposed design, short narrative explaining how the artwork fits the community, lead artist's qualifications and examples of previous work, contact information for two references from completed commissions, project timeline, and cost estimate. An Artist Selection Panel will review submissions and interview finalists. Installation is tentatively scheduled for December 2021/January 2022.
