About This Call
The Breckenridge Public Art Commission (BPAC) and the Breckenridge Town Council seek to commission a sculptor or team of sculptors to create an exterior work of art for the roundabout at the northern entry to the town. The sculpture's location will be highly visible to all those arriving to and departing from Breckenridge. This commission is open to any and all artists within the United States.
Artists should consider the following elements for the proposed sculpture: sense of arrival to the town, a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork, a timeless and iconic statement piece, simplicity and recognizability at approximately 15 MPH, sensitivity to the space, compliance with all Colorado Department of Transportation guidelines, and harmonious materials with the character of the site and town. Proposals should also consider future maintenance and resistance to weather and vandalism.
A minimum of three finalists will be selected and provided with an honorarium to conduct research, develop final proposal materials including a maquette, and present their proposal to the BPAC and community. The BPAC has budgeted up to $100,000 USD for the final sculpture, including design, engineering, transportation, and installation. The successful proposal will meet the creative intent and have a cost-effective budget for the sculptors' time and materials. If no proposal is determined to be appropriate, BPAC may decide to reopen the selection process. Finalists will be selected December 18, 2013, with maquettes presented to BPAC and the public on January 29, 2014.
