About This Call

The Town of Barrington is seeking sculptural public artwork for the Park at Police Cove, a waterfront park under development on the site of the former Police Headquarters. The site is located between the East Bay Bike Path and County Road (Route 114/103) and will feature a floating dock, walkways, seating areas, grass lawn, outdoor dining area, shade structures, benches, bike racks, and landscaped gardens. An area approximately 15 feet in diameter within the waterfront plaza is designated for the artwork. High preference will be given to proposals that creatively reference the waterfront context and encourage park users to interact with the works. More than one art piece may be proposed, with additional pieces potentially installed outside the designated circular area.

Works must be sculptural, fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and has proven viability in public artworks. All artwork must be original and relate to the waterfront setting. A budget of up to $30,000 is available for one or more artworks, with the total contract amount including design fees, execution, transportation, site preparation, landscaping, and installation. Projects exceeding the budget will not be considered. This is an open competition for professional artists; teams are welcome to apply with one application per artist or team.

Applications must include: a current resume with statements regarding artwork and art education; a statement of interest expressing initial ideas for the work; three references from clients on similar projects; and a minimum of two to six artwork images (noting medium, dimensions, location, and price). The committee will evaluate responses based on artists' past experience with public art, statements of initial ideas, and references. Up to three finalists will be invited to present specific proposals in person. Notification of finalists is anticipated by May 15, 2013, with selection in June/July 2013 and installation following park construction completion. Questions may be directed to Philip Hervey, Town Planner, at [email protected].
