About This Call

Inspired by the City initiative Tipping Points for Creatives, this project at Tamarind will engage artists ready to expand their practice to include collaborative printmaking. Up to five New Mexico artists will be selected to print at Tamarind over the next 18 months (approximately May 2020 through June 2021). Each artist will participate in a two-week workshop residency to make one lithograph in collaboration with Tamarind-trained printers; no previous printmaking experience is necessary. Fully supported workshop sessions are available May/June 2020 and March/May/June 2021 (M-F, 8am-5pm).

The resulting portfolio of five prints will be produced in an edition of fifteen. The City of Albuquerque receives two complete portfolios, participating artists each receive three artist proofs and one complete portfolio, participating printers each receive one printer's proof, and Tamarind Institute receives eight complete portfolios. One portfolio enters the University of New Mexico Art Museum Tamarind Archive, and six portfolios will be exhibited in Tamarind's public gallery and presented at international art fairs.

Each artist will receive a $1,200 design fee from the City of Albuquerque, and the City will cover the Tamarind workshop fee for a 4-5 color lithograph measuring 30 x 22 inches. Selected artists may augment the printing budget with their own funds for additional colors, paper size, or special processes. Additional benefits include a complete portfolio of all five participating artists' prints, direct experience in collaborative printmaking, one print in the UNM Art Museum Tamarind Archive, two prints in the City of Albuquerque Public Art Collection, and inclusion on Tamarind's website and platforms such as Artsy and social media.

Submission Requirements: Artist statement (maximum 500 words) outlining how collaboration will further professional career, resume or CV (maximum 10 pages), and up to 10 images of recent artwork (2016-2020). The opportunity is open to artists currently residing in New Mexico. Applicants must specify availability for a two-week workshop residency in May/June 2020 and March/May/June 2021. Deadline for submission is February 24 at 11:59 PM MST. Art Selection Committee Review is March 16, with notification of artist selection on March 30.
