About This Call
The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts seeks to commission up to four temporary "wind" themed artworks to be exhibited in the gardens of the Taos Art Museum in Taos, NM. Artwork should be environmentally sensitive and respond to the theme of "wind," with encouragement for innovative materials. New Mexico Arts challenges artists to create artworks that will inspire, engage, question, puzzle, amuse, and otherwise influence visitors to the museum. The installations will be displayed for a little over a month, coinciding with both the Taos Fall Arts Festival and the Taos Institute of Glass Artists Bi-annual Exhibition.
Artwork will be located in and around the gardens of the Taos Museum of Art. Four sites are available with the following dimensions: 30' x 28', 10' x 12', 14' x 16', and 10' x 27'. No artwork requiring concrete pads or other environmentally damaging approaches will be considered. Media must be low maintenance, safe for both children and adults, ADA compliant, and not leave a permanent mark on the environment when removed. No large holes may be dug or foreign organic materials released into the environment. Artwork must be sufficiently secured against high winds and intense weather conditions. Artists understand their artwork may be subject to damage, vandalism, or theft, and neither New Mexico Arts nor the Taos Museum of Art will be responsible for such occurrences.
Project amounts available are between $1,000 and $5,000, with a detailed budget required at application submission. Artists are responsible for all applicable expenses including materials, labor, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, photographic documentation, and retrieval. This project is open to New Mexico artists and artist teams only; artists in all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Employees of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs or the Taos Art Museum and individuals involved in the state contracting process are not eligible. Submission requirements include a letter of interest, brief project proposal, detailed project budget, resume, and ten images of proposed installation or previously completed work. Selected artists will enter into a Professional Services Contract with the Department of Cultural Affairs, New Mexico Arts, and the Taos Art Museum. Installation begins September 21, 2014, with opening reception on September 28, 2014, and installation closes November 9, 2014.
