About This Call
The Art in Public Places Program (AIPP) of New Mexico Arts seeks to commission up to seven temporary environmentally based artworks to be exhibited in various outdoor locations in Navajo Nation. Available sites include Gallup, Shiprock, Ramah Nation, To'Hajilee, Chaco Canyon Valley in New Mexico, and Monument Valley and Canyon De Chelly in Arizona. Specific sites will be determined by selected artists in conjunction with the TIME Project Local Selection Committee.
Proposed artworks should relate to the theme of Hozho Nahasdlii (Harmony in the Making) and reflect concepts and materials sensitive to the land and people in the Navajo Nation. No artwork requiring concrete pads or other environmentally damaging approaches will be considered. Media must be low maintenance, safe for children and adults, ADA compliant, and not leave a permanent mark on the environment when removed. No large holes may be dug or foreign organic materials released into the environment. Artwork must be secured against high winds and intense weather conditions. At removal, the artist will return the installation site to its original condition. Artists understand their artwork may be subject to damage, vandalism, or theft, and neither New Mexico Arts nor the sites will be responsible for such occurrences.
Project amounts are variable and will be determined in collaboration with selected artists based on individual project needs. Artists are responsible for all applicable expenses including materials, labor, insurance, taxes, installation, photographic documentation, and artwork retrieval. There is no medical or workers' compensation insurance provided by the State of New Mexico or the sites. This project is open to New Mexico residents only. Artists in all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Submission deadline is September 30, 2011. Selected artists will be notified in October 2011, with artwork installation in May 2012 and removal in August 2012. Submissions must include a letter of interest, resume, ten images of previously completed work, and an annotated image list. Questions should be directed to Eileen Braziel at 505-699-4914 or [email protected].
