About This Call
The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts, Route 66 Arts Alliance, and City of Edgewood seek to commission five temporary environmentally based artworks to be exhibited in various locations in Edgewood, New Mexico. The proposed artworks should relate to this year's theme: "Persistence." The strongest proposals will be for works which engage the temporary nature of this series of installations and relate strongly to the cultural and environmental histories of the area. Site-specific and ephemeral works are encouraged. Artwork should appeal to both local residents and visitors to the area.
Artworks will be located in exterior locations in Edgewood, including The Wildlife West Nature Park, Edgewood Town Hall and Library, various locations along the walkways of RD 344, Animal Shelter, Police Station and the Community Park Pavilion. Specific sites will be determined by the requirements of the selected artwork in conjunction with the TIME Project Selection Committee. Murals will be considered as eligible installations. No artwork requiring concrete pads or other environmentally damaging approaches will be considered. Media must be low maintenance, safe for both children and adults, ADA compliant, and not leave a permanent mark on the environment when removed. No large holes may be dug or foreign organic materials released into the environment. Artwork must be sufficiently secured against high winds and intense weather conditions. At the agreed upon time of removal, the artist will return the installation site to its original condition, subject to the approval of the site representative. Artists understand that their artwork may be subject to damage, vandalism or theft at any time, and neither New Mexico Arts, City of Edgewood, nor the site host will be responsible for such occurrences.
This project is open to New Mexico residents aged 18 years and older only. Artists in all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Five artists or artist teams will each receive $3,000 for their project, which includes all applicable expenses such as materials, labor, insurance, taxes, installation, and retrieval of the artwork. Artists will be paid in two phases: $1,000 after contract approval and $2,000 after the artwork is installed, removed if applicable, and all required documentation materials are received. There is no medical or workers' compensation insurance provided by the State of New Mexico, City of Edgewood or the host sites; artists will be responsible for providing coverage. Selected artists will be required to enter into a professional services agreement with New Mexico Arts. Artwork installation is scheduled for June 30th, 2017, with an opening reception on July 1st and removal in late August. Submission requirements include a detailed description of the artwork, 1-3 proposed artwork images, a CV or resume, six images of previously completed work, an annotated image list, and a clean-up plan.
