About This Call
The City of Lewisville is seeking qualifications from artists to create a set of artistic markers along the future Timber Creek Trail Extension that will connect an underserved neighborhood with Central Park, the City's largest neighborhood park. The new trail will be approximately 1 mile long and will run along the northern edge of Timber Creek east to Corporate Drive, featuring a combination of elevated boardwalk and concrete trail sections. Construction of the trail is anticipated to begin in Spring 2025 for a duration of 18-24 months.
The City seeks an artist or artist team who can create a unique work of art that honors the three ecosystems that converge in Lewisville for this trail project. This is an opportunity for artists who work in medium to small sized outdoor works or serial-style works. Artists who work with themes of nature are strongly encouraged to apply. This call is open to Texas-based artists only. The budget for this commission is up to $50,000 USD.
Artwork must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor installation. The trail is largely shaded but some areas will have sun more regularly. Works must either be stand alone or can be attached to man-made structures, but cannot be attached to trees. There will be no permanent lighting or power available at the installation site(s). Traditional, colorful, powder-coating finishes are not preferred due to limited longevity in Texas extreme climate. The trail is in the floodplain where seasonal flooding is a regular occurrence, so materials must be able to withstand possible submersion in water. Preference will be given to artists experienced with outdoor park installations and/or naturalist type work, with artistic practices demonstrating durable and sustainable approaches. Work samples may include up to 8 images and 6 videos, with a minimum of 1 total sample required.
