About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking an art work for its Public Art program. Artist(s) are invited to submit portfolios of past work for consideration. Up to five (5) artists will be invited to submit site-specific proposals for a tile mural art work to be permanently located at the Canyon Country Community Center courtyard. The City intends to select one artist to design and fabricate the art work. The location will serve as a backdrop for weddings, events, banquets, and gatherings. The all-inclusive budget for this project is $25,000 in total.

The art work must fit a pre-determined wall area of 5' tall and 50' wide. Design must be an original work with no designated theme, though the building features a 'California Rustic' architectural design. The art work must be suitable for viewing by all ages and may not be used for advertisement or to promote business, product, or viewpoint. Designs must not include any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, business names, corporate or organizational branding, or images of drugs. Artists should consider materials that can withstand desert climate conditions (high winds, extreme temperatures), uncovered weather, theft, and vandalism. Artists will be required to describe their experience with proposed materials and provide a maintenance schedule. The art work must be constructed of durable materials, comply with standard engineering practices, conform to ADA standards, and not present a hazard to public safety. Installation must include sufficient anchoring to prevent tiles from being removed, broken, or overturned due to wind or earthquake.

Up to five (5) semi-finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium plus $400 accommodation allowance for the art work proposal. Semi-finalists must present a PowerPoint/PDF proposal addressing design guidelines, maintenance and conservation, and project budget in a 30-minute presentation. The selected artist is responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, and installation expenses, as well as travel and hotel accommodations. The artist must provide installation instructions and a maintenance guide, and include insurance coverage for the installation period only. Eligibility: Artists 18 years of age or older, individual or collaborative applications accepted, must be located in the U.S. Application deadline: November 30, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Required materials: cover letter, resume or CV, artist statement, and portfolio of up to ten (10) images of previous work (at least one must be an existing public art work). Image descriptions must include materials, dimensions, previously shown location and dates, and maintenance information.
