Things We Carry – a Contemporary Asian Experience

This exhibition seeks works from artists responding to the multitudes that Asians/Asian-Americans carry, represent and experience, as a modern collective. Stories of immigration often incorporate the idea of worn baggage, as in, what has been brought over—intangibly, theoretically, philosophically, and sometimes subconsciously—and ingrained into one's sense of home. Artists are encouraged to reflect on one's deep appreciation for tradition while also affirming one's sense of belonging and place.

All mediums are accepted, including videos and installations. Artists may submit a maximum of 3 works of art, with up to 3 images per work (one main image and two detail images). Work previously shown in any Studio Montclair exhibition will not be accepted. No giclee reproductions of original art are accepted. Submitted work must be available for the duration of the exhibition; no substitutions will be accepted after selections are finalized.

The exhibition will be held at Studio Montclair's Leach Gallery, 641 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, NJ, from September 19 to October 24, 2025. The entry deadline is June 30, 2025. Artists will be notified the week of July 14, 2025. Artwork delivery by hand is available Friday, September 5, 4-6pm and Saturday, September 6, 10am-1pm. Artwork delivery by shipping must arrive by Thursday, September 11, 2025. The opening reception is Friday, September 19, 2025, 6-8pm. Pickup of unsold artwork is Friday, October 24, 5-7pm and Saturday, October 25, 10am-1pm. The juror is Adriana Proser, Mr. and Mrs. John Quincy Scott Curator of Asian Art and Chief Curator at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, MD.
