The Tony Gwynn Memorial

The City of Poway is seeking proposals for a bronze memorial of Tony Gwynn to be located at Lake Poway. The sculpture should communicate the qualities of Baseball Legend, Poway Resident, Family Man, Friend, Coach, and Spectator. The City seeks an aesthetically imaginative, site-specific, appropriately scaled bronze sculpture that will have a positive impact on Lake Poway, its residents and visitors. The overall vision could include way-finding elements, seating, embedded or integrated work in the hardscape/landscape. The piece must be durable cast bronze with industry standard thickness, able to withstand high-traffic, unmonitored outdoor environments with little maintenance and safeguards against theft.

The total project budget range is $100,000 to $150,000, which includes sculptor fees and costs for design, engineering, fabrication of the sculpture and base, and delivery. The City will provide assistance for base materials and fabrication. The sculptor will perform as advisor during installation and is required to make up to two site visits for consultation. The design proposal must include renderings and a scale model. Award of the contract is contingent upon successful fund-raising efforts.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal residents, minimum 18 years of age, and reside in the Western US or have completed work in California, preferably in the San Diego area. Applicants must demonstrate previous experience and expertise with sports figures and bronze sculpture in bust, life size, and two times life size formats through portfolio submission. Applicants must be willing to meet project deadlines and travel to Poway for presentations if selected as a finalist. Final artwork becomes the property of the City of Poway while artists retain copyright. Applications must include a Sculptor Statement of Interest, resume with two references, visual representations of past sculpture work, annotated descriptions of sample sculptures with title, date, location, dimensions, materials, and budget, and a timeline for design development through installation.
