About This Call

Oglebay Institute, a nonprofit cultural hub serving Wheeling, West Virginia since 1930, offers 12-week artist residencies through the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Three terms are available: January 13 – March 31, 2025; February 1 – April 30, 2025; and March 1 – May 31, 2025. Artists may apply for one term only. Preference is given to artists working in ceramics, jewelry, stained glass, and/or printmaking.

The residency program aims to amplify community engagement in the arts, provide professional development for early-career artists, and expand arts education offerings. Resident artists will collaborate with Stifel Fine Arts Center staff to develop arts curriculum for seniors (age 65+) and high school students in Belmont County, Ohio. They will teach workshops, assist with spring classes, and participate in critique sessions with local master artists. Residents receive access to studio space, a $750 stipend for materials and equipment, and a $2,500 living stipend. Reduced housing is available upon request. Each resident will present a public exhibition of work created during the residency and may participate in vendor markets and juried exhibitions including Oglebayfest, the Holiday Art Show & Sale, Crosscurrents, and the Earth & Fire Exhibition.

Studio facilities include a ceramic studio with 13 electric pottery wheels, multiple kilns, and specialized equipment; a jewelry studio with workbenches, torches, and tools; a stained glass studio with grinding wheels and glass assortment; and a printmaking studio with etching press, screen printing equipment, and gel printing plates. Applicants must submit a cover letter (maximum 2 pages), resume (maximum 2 pages), artist statement (250 words), 5-10 images of completed work, 2 headshots, and 3 images of artist at work. The residency is open to professional and emerging artists age 21 and over with reliable transportation. A nonrefundable $20 entry fee is required. The program is supported by funding from the EQT Foundation and the Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation.
