About This Call

Oglebay Institute, a nonprofit cultural hub serving Wheeling, West Virginia since 1930, offers 12-week artist residencies in partnership with the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Three terms are available: February 1 – April 30, 2024; March 1 – May 31, 2024; and April 1 – June 29, 2024. Artists may apply for one term only. Preference is given to artists working in ceramics, jewelry, stained glass, and/or printmaking.

The residency program aims to amplify community engagement in the arts, provide professional development for early-career artists, and expand arts education offerings. Resident artists will collaborate with Stifel Fine Arts Center staff to develop an arts curriculum for seniors (age 65+) in Belmont County, Ohio, teach workshops, and assist with Spring classes. They will participate in critique sessions with local master artists and create a body of work for a public exhibition documenting their residency period.

Residents receive access to studio space at the Stifel Fine Arts Center, a $750 stipend for materials and equipment, and a $2,500 living stipend. Reduced housing is available upon request. Studio facilities include a ceramic studio with 13 electric pottery wheels, 3 kilns, and additional equipment; a jewelry studio with workbenches, torches, and tools; a stained glass studio with grinding wheels and glass assortment; and a printmaking studio with etching press, screen printing equipment, and related tools. Depending on their medium, artists may participate in vendor markets at Oglebayfest or the Holiday Art Show & Sale, and submit work to juried exhibitions including Crosscurrents and Earth & Fire.

Eligibility: Open to professional and emerging artists age 21 and over. Reliable transportation for outreach programs is required. Application requires a cover letter (500 words or 2 pages maximum), resume (2 pages maximum), artist statement (250 words or 1 page), 5-10 images of completed work, 2 headshots, and 3 images of artist at work. Entry fee: $30 (nonrefundable). The program is supported by funding from the EQT Foundation and the Elizabeth Stifel Kline Foundation.
