The Skin I'm In

The Skin I'm In is a regional juried exhibition exploring living life as yourself and all the identities that come with it—how you see yourself and how the world sees you. This exhibition invites artists to creatively share their stories as a person with a disability, a war veteran, a Black woman, a person of color, a member of the LGBTQ community, an Asian man, a Muslim grandmother, an Indigenous person, or any other identity. The exhibition is juried by Donna Jackson, a designer and project manager with 18 years of experience developing marketing and promotional strategies for urban libraries and non-profits. Jackson is the founder of DMJStudio and has created numerous art projects and exhibitions including Colorful Women, Door of Opportunity, Posters on Politics, Women Work, Middle Detroit, and In Pursuit of Hope.

This call is open to artists 18 years of age or older in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. All work must be original and completed in the last three years. Submissions should include 1-2 images in jpeg format, a title, and a brief statement explaining how the piece relates to the theme. Size limits: 2D work maximum 72" high x 55" wide; 3D work must fit through a standard doorway and weigh no more than 50 lbs. No installations or ceiling-hung work. Entry fee is $25.00 for up to two pieces, or $10.00 for student artists and artists economically challenged by COVID or unforeseen events. Awards: $250 for 1st Place, $100 for 2nd Place. The exhibition runs October 1 – November 6, 2021 at South Haven Center for the Arts, 600 Phoenix St, South Haven, MI 49090. Opening reception is Friday, October 1, 5–7pm. Delivery of accepted work: September 22-25, 2021. Pick-up: November 16-19, 2021. A 35% commission is retained by SHCA for works sold during the exhibition.
