About This Call

The Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship Fund provides up to three $25,000 artist fellowships each year, rotating among visual artists, composers, and writers on a three-year cycle. The 2007 fellowships are for visual artists working within the disciplines of two-dimensional and three-dimensional arts. The two-dimensional category includes artist books, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and mixed-media. The three-dimensional category includes sculpture, installation, and environmental works. Execution materials may be traditional, non-traditional, or digital.

Fellowships are awarded to Rhode Island artists whose work demonstrates exceptional creativity, rigorous dedication, and significant artistic merit. The fellowships provide significant financial support to enable artists to concentrate time on the creative process, personal development, and expand their body of work. Fellows are expected to devote concentrated time to their work during the term of the fellowship and engage in activities which further their artistic growth. An out-of-state panel of artists, curators, and arts administrators will review applications and work samples.

Applicants will be evaluated on the quality of their work and artistic achievements, with work completed within the last five years, and their ability to demonstrate that the fellowship will advance their work and enable exploration of new directions and techniques. Eligibility requires demonstrated proficiency in the visual arts and Rhode Island residency at the time of application and during the fellowship period. Proof of residency requires copies of two types of documentation (such as Rhode Island income tax form, W2, driver's license, identification card, lease or mortgage agreement, voter registration, or automobile registration). Artists enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application are ineligible. A maximum of 450 applications will be accepted. Applications require submission of contact information, artist narrative, resume or CV, and 10 work samples completed within the last five years with descriptions including media, size, title, and date of completion. Hard-copy residency documentation must be mailed or hand-delivered to The Rhode Island Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, Rhode Island 02903, by 5:00 pm on February 12, 2007.
