About This Call
The Robert and Margaret MacColl Johnson Fellowship Fund provides up to three $25,000 artist fellowships each year, rotating among composers, writers, and visual artists on a three-year cycle. The 2008 fellowships are for music composition. Applications are accepted for original compositions in chamber, choral, electronic, experimental, symphonic, opera, contemporary, nontraditional, and world music genres and musical theater. Jazz composers are eligible to apply as long as a significant component of work is composed and/or consists of structured improvisation. Singer/songwriters are not eligible to apply.
Fellowships are awarded to Rhode Island artists whose work demonstrates exceptional creativity, rigorous dedication, and significant artistic merit. The fellowships provide significant financial support to enable artists to concentrate time on the creative process, personal development, and expand their body of work. Fellows are expected to devote concentrated time to their work during the term of the fellowship and engage in activities which further their artistic growth, such as creation of new work, purchasing of music/tech equipment, travel, or research and development.
Applicants must be emerging to mid-career artists and residents of Rhode Island at the time of application and during the fellowship period. Applicants will be evaluated on the quality of their work and artistic achievements, with work completed within the last five years, and their ability to demonstrate that the fellowship will advance their work and career. Students enrolled in a degree-granting program at the time of application are ineligible. Applications must be submitted through the CaFÉ website with up to four audio files (maximum 30 minutes of music) and up to 15 pages of scores, lead sheets, or performance notes. The application deadline is August 1, 2008 by midnight Mountain Daylight Time. For technical assistance, contact Wanda Miglus or Daniel Kertzner at The Rhode Island Foundation at 401-274-4564 or [email protected].
