The Railyards Mural Project

The Boulder Creative Collective has partnered with the S'Park neighborhood to curate 3 large scale murals on The Railyards building. The artwork will be painted on MDO board and then mounted and installed to the East face of the building. This open call is open to artists with experience in large scale murals.

The selected artist(s) will create original designs for the exterior of The Railyards that will be fabricated and installed by subcontractors. Each section is 18'-8" W x 7'-8" H, and each selected artist will have 3 sections to create one thematic image/design. The artist prompt asks artists to consider the local landscape from the plains to the foothills of the Front Range, exploring themes of community, nature, and modern western design. During the planning and design phase, artists will be expected to review and revise concepts with The BCC to ensure the integrated art meets safety and site-specific regulations.

Eligibility: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and demonstrate public art experience. This project is open to any artist regardless of residency, race, ethnicity, or gender. Applicants may apply as individuals or teams; if applying as a team, a team lead must be designated as the point of contact. Entry fee is $30. Submissions must include 5-10 digital images of previously-created artwork in JPG format and an image/title list (1 page limit) describing the project in terms of materials, scale, and site location. All artists, participants, and hired subcontractors are required to have current liability insurance and provide their up to date declaration page. The overall budget available for each multi-panel mural is $18,240. Selected artists will be paid in thirds: upon contract completion, at the midpoint of the project, and upon delivery and installation of murals. MDO will be provided for selected artists; all other materials should be budgeted by applicants. Project timeline: finalists selected by October 1, 2020; three finalists juried by November 1, 2020; work begins November 15, 2020; mural completion February 1, 2021; installation March 2021.
