About This Call
The Jamestown Arts Center is seeking sculptures and installations for its inaugural Outdoor Arts Experience 2020, a celebration of the Arts Center's 10th Anniversary. The OAE will place 10 works at varied and diverse sites around Jamestown. Artists are encouraged to submit work in the following categories: impact/larger scale, moderate intimate scale, intentionally functional, and experimental work including installation, new media, temporal, participatory, or environmental art. A separate Artist-in-Residence program is also available for a collaborative site-specific installation to be created at the Melrose School.
Selected works will receive a $1,000 honorarium and the opportunity to list work for sale, with artists receiving 65% of sales. Artwork will be on public view for four months in highly-visible locations throughout Jamestown. The Jamestown Arts Center will carry liability insurance, provide identifying signage, and publicize the exhibition through its website, walking map, social media, direct mail, and local advertising. Artists will receive photography of installed work and have opportunities to give presentations and interact with the public. All selected artists are expected to participate in community-based programming such as leading school field trips, holding artist talks, participating in panel discussions, conducting workshops, or hosting studio tours.
Work must be suitable for outdoor installation and built to withstand adverse weather conditions. Artists are responsible for transportation, installation, and removal of work. Work should be 12' x 8' x 8' or smaller, or made of components up to this size. Artists must detail provisions for stability in their application and will participate in studio visits to vet installation plans. The selection panel will include community members, artists, and Anne Strauss, a curator in public art. One installation is reserved for selection by JAC staff. Exhibition may include works by invitation in addition to jury-selected works. Applications must include contact information, bio or CV, up to six images or video showing various angles or detailed plans, a statement about the work, and description of installation/removal requirements and stability provisions.
