About This Call

The Salt Lake City Department of Airports invites artists and artist-led teams to submit qualifications for The New SLC Mid-Concourse Tunnel Mural Opportunity as part of the Airport Terminal Redevelopment Program. The Salt Lake City International Airport is evolving to meet the region's growing needs as an international hub. The SLCDA has contracted with national public art consultant Gordon Huether to develop a comprehensive art master plan, which includes the Mid-Concourse Tunnel Murals. Four 144-foot murals will be installed in the Mid-Concourse Tunnel, a passenger walkway connecting terminals at The New SLC Airport. The tunnel will open in October 2020 with the completion of phase one of the Airport construction and will be the exclusive avenue for passengers to move between two concourses for an estimated three years.

Two artists selected from four finalists will each receive a budget of $119,000 for commission and purchase of their two murals (two seasons for each finalist), inclusive of artist's fees and related expenses for design, supplies, insurance, transportation, permits, surface preparation and installation. The murals will be painted on a wall of heavily textured concrete with a polymer modified waterproof coating. Each mural will have final dimensions of approximately 144 feet long by 10 feet high. The SLCDA Selection Committee seeks individual artists or artist-led teams that can produce site-specific murals representing each of the four seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter), of the highest quality creatively and compositionally, that are not politically or socially charged, and that meet all public safety, structural, and maintenance standards and comply with the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA) and all other applicable laws, codes and regulations.

This RFQ is open to all professional artists and/or artist-led teams based in the United States. Artists residing in Utah are strongly encouraged to apply. Submission deadline is February 28, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Applications must be submitted via the CaFÉ website with no application fee. Required materials include a letter of interest (not to exceed 500 words), current CV or resume (not to exceed two pages), 5-10 jpeg images of installed past work of similar scope and scale, and a list of two professional references. All artwork submitted must be original and one-of-a-kind and must not infringe on any copyright, trademark or other intellectual property rights. All rights, title and interest to the artwork, including all intellectual property rights and rights of reproduction shall pass to the City.
