About This Call
The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Grant honors the late Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed, students of Hans Hofmann who were active members, instructors, and committee participants at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) for 50 years. Lillian Orlowsky was committed to supporting mature artists facing financial challenges, particularly those working outside mainstream or popular schools of art. This grant reflects her desire to provide financial support to artists regardless of market demands.
Grants are offered to American painters aged 45 or older who demonstrate financial need. The primary emphasis is to promote public awareness and commitment to American art, as well as to encourage interest in painters who lack adequate recognition. For this grant, painting is defined as the application of various wet media (oil, acrylic, gouache, ink, tempera, watercolor, egg tempera, casein, enamel) on paper, canvas, fabric, or wood, including fresco. Mixed media, encaustic, collage, dry pastels, digital paintings, prints, and graphite drawings are excluded. The use of multiple paint mediums is allowed.
Applicants must be American citizens or have permanent residency in the United States, though they may be living abroad. A demonstrated need for financial support is required; there is no set cutoff, as applicants are compared within the pool. Applications require 10 images, artist statement, resume, essay, and financial information. A jury of three art historians, artists, curators, and critics will review applications in late spring. Applicants will be notified no later than July 1, 2024.
