About This Call
The San Anselmo Arts Commission is seeking artists to paint the concrete benches at "The Hub," the central San Anselmo bus stop located at the convergence of Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Center Blvd, and Red Hill Ave. The project aims to beautify and enliven this busy Marin County transit point, enhance the character and identity of San Anselmo, and create a welcoming visual experience. The design should represent San Anselmo, reflect the neighborhood and community, and be suitable for viewing by all ages. There are 2 covered bus shelters: the East shelter (closest to Sir Francis Drake Blvd) with one long bench, and the West shelter with one long bench and one shorter bench in front. Artists can submit a proposal for both benches or team with other artists to create a cohesive design submission.
The budget is a competitive process with a maximum artist stipend of $7,500 that includes both East and West benches. The stipend must cover all costs associated with the project including design, installation, materials, equipment, protective finish coating, and insurance. The entire project must be completed within 14 calendar days from the beginning of installation, including preparation and finish coat. Work can happen on only one bench at a time due to the busy transit stop.
Applicants must be professional artists (18 and over) with a minimum of three completed murals and must reside within the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma). Application requirements include artist background information (resume, website link, artist statement, at least 3 visual samples of past public art works, and 2 references), a color design draft, a concept statement describing how the design reflects the town's identity and detailing the process and materials, and a budget plan itemizing costs. Notification of selection will be by March 12, 2024, with project completion required by July 1, 2024.
