About This Call
The Figure As Story is a juried exhibition featuring abstract and representational works in all media except video. The exhibition is open to artists 18 and older living in nine Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Works must not exceed 5 feet in any direction and can be completed at any point in the artist's career. Upon acceptance, each artist will provide a paragraph of 100 words or less identifying the story within their image.
Entry fee is $15 per artwork, with a maximum of 4 entries per artist. Submissions must include 1-4 JPG images at 300 dpi resolution minimum, with file dimensions of 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side and file size under 5 MB. The jurying process is blind, conducted from digital images submitted through Callforentry.org. Jurors will select three artists for the Jurors Recognition Award. The exhibition runs from April 17 to June 7, 2025.
Jurors include Kathleen Hanna, an independent curator and exhibition designer with a five-decade career in Bay Area museums; Llisa Demetrios, Chief Curator of the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity; and Carole Barlas, a local Petaluma artist with a Ph.D. in Adult Learning and Transformation. A related community event will feature an afternoon workshop mixing visual arts with writing, where participants select a piece of art and spend 20 minutes writing a story about it to share with others.
