The Essence of a Woman

The MVA Gallery (Modern Visual Arts) invites artists, photographers, and sculptors of all levels to submit original artwork exploring the essence of a woman—her physical, psychological, and spiritual characteristics. Artists may create portraits ranging from simple images of a woman in tranquil repose to complex depictions of her actively performing personal and professional roles. Artwork can reveal vulnerability or strength, examine cultural influences and societal expectations, or explore identity and perception through portraiture. Environmental portraits showing individuals in their surroundings, personas or alter egos, and self-portraits are all welcome. Artists may submit traditional and non-traditional styles in any medium including painting, watercolor, printmaking, mixed media, digital, pastel, encaustic, sculpture, fiber, drawing, and photography.

Entry fee is $35.00 for 3 images, with additional images available for $5.00 each up to a maximum of 9 total. All images must be submitted as JPEG files under 5 MB with a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longest side. Submissions must include title, medium, size, price, and year of completion. Artwork must be professionally finished and ready for secure installation with stretched wire attached to the back. Maximum dimensions are 48 inches (framed) on the longest side and 45 lbs for paintings; sculpture should not exceed 24 inches on any dimension. Photographs should be framed in black or white frames with white or off-white mats.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by email on or about September 15, 2024. Accepted artwork must arrive at the gallery no later than October 15, 2024. The exhibition runs October 18 through November 20, 2024. Awards include an Art of Distinction Award featuring a special exhibition, an Annual Grand Prize offering a New York City exhibition opportunity, and an optional Director's Choice Award of $200. Artists are responsible for all shipping and insurance costs both to and from the gallery and must provide prepaid return shipping labels.
