About This Call
The Elephant in the Room seeks to explore relationships and dependencies between humans and animals. Interactions with the natural environment and with other creatures significantly define the human experience. The dichotomy between the two adapts and shifts according to time, culture, species, and circumstance.
This international juried exhibition challenges artists to bring attention to difficult topics like the industrialized meat and dairy industry, domestic animal breeding, homeless pet populations, and vivisection within cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, while also welcoming examples of harmony and mutual respect between human and animal. The exhibition will explore the enigma that some creatures are innately friends while others are innately tools for survival or convenience. All interpretations of the theme and all mediums and scales of work are welcome.
Eligibility: Open to all artists over the age of 16. All fine art media are accepted including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography, collage, digital, and mixed media. All work must be original and completed in the last two years. Sculptures should not exceed 9 feet in height. Entry fee: $25 per artist. Work samples: 1-6 images (high-resolution 300dpi jpeg, files not to exceed 5MB), 0-3 audio files, and 0-3 video files accepted. 2D artwork must be framed with secure hanging hardware. Canvas sides and staples must be covered. Sculptures must be fully assembled, structurally sound, and include detailed installation instructions if necessary. Entries due: 2/21/2020. Notifications to artists on or before: 3/5/2020. Delivery of artwork: 3/18/2020-3/21/2020. Exhibition dates: 4/3/2020-4/24/2020. Opening reception: 4/3/2020, 5:30pm-9:00pm. Pick-up: 4/25/2020 and 4/29/2020 or 4/30/2020. Sales are encouraged with a 30% commission to the gallery. Delivery and pick-up of artwork is the artist's responsibility.
