About This Call
The Crow Show 2016: A Celebration of Black Birds is an exhibition of visual art running from February 5–28, 2016, produced by The Studio Door in San Diego. The Studio Door is seeking artwork that represents the many faces of the Crow in reality and fantasy. Found in nearly every corner of the world, crows are considered one of the world's most intelligent animals. In mythology, crows have fascinated mankind—for some cultures, they heralded important news and symbolized the unity of marriage; for others, they took on an ominous and dark role in war and death.
Accepted categories include painting, drawing, photo, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media, fiber art, artist book, ceramics, stained glass, and sculpture. The exhibition does not accept jewelry, video, film, performance art, installation, or works requiring an external electrical source. Submissions must be the artist's original work. Two-dimensional work must not exceed 8 feet in height and 4 feet in width (including frame). Three-dimensional work must fit a pedestal sized 16 inches x 16 inches or take up no more than 4 feet of gallery floor space. Artworks must arrive gallery ready, ready to hang, and presented professionally. Framed artwork must use black wood or natural wood frame with no color mats and plexi only (no glass).
Entry fee is $35 for one artwork submission, $5 for each additional submission (up to three total). Artists may submit 1–3 images. The juror, Michelle Deziel (Independent Curator and Art Consultant, former curator with Norton Simon Museum of Art), will select works for both the physical gallery exhibition and an online-only gallery. A Juror's Award ribbon and certificate will be presented to three works expressing the most imaginative interpretation of the theme, with one designated "Best in Show" to be used as the exhibition catalog cover. All selected artwork will be included in a national exhibition virtual catalog. Artists grant The Studio Door permission to photograph selected artwork and use images for marketing and publicity without compensation. Notification to artists will be by January 12, 2016. Hand-delivery of artwork is available January 31 (noon–4 PM) or February 2 (10 AM–6 PM). Shipped artwork must be received by January 30, 2016, with prepaid shipping labels required. For sales, 60% goes to the artist and 40% to The Studio Door. The opening reception is February 6, 2016, 6 PM–9 PM.
