About This Call

The Decatur Arts Alliance presents the fifth edition of the juried exhibition of artists' books, The Book as Art, August 11–September 29, 2017, installed at the Decatur Branch of the DeKalb County Public Library. The show's dates encompass the AJC-Decatur Book Festival, which takes place each Labor Day weekend throughout the City of Decatur. The DAA will sponsor a festive opening and juror's talk on Friday, August 25, 2017. The library location is just off the Decatur Square, accessible to more than 85,000 Festival attendees as well as visitors throughout the run of the show.

The exhibition emphasizes the art form of artists' books in forms that introduce new interpretations of an ancient concept and questions and ideas on 21st-century form and format. The DAA is interested in showcasing beautifully made volumes, sculptural and conceptual interpretations, one-of-a-kind approaches to the book format, and wall-hung interpretations. Several events are planned throughout the run of the show, including an opening and juror's talk on August 25, 2017, library programming, and White Glove Nights when viewers can enjoy close-up examination of artwork and hear selected artists discuss their work.

Artists may submit original or limited edition original or altered books. Entries are open April 15 – June 2, 2017 through callforentry.org. Up to three pieces may be entered for a $30.00 fee, with up to five images per item. Work samples must include 1-5 images and optionally up to 1 video. The jurors are Anne Beidler, Daniel Essig, and John Risseeuw. Awards include First Place ($1,000), Second Place ($700), Third Place ($500), and Merit Award ($100). Purchase awards are being solicited, and an online catalogue is anticipated. Sales are encouraged; the DAA collects a 25% commission on all artwork sold. Work will be insured for the duration of the exhibition. No work accepted may be withdrawn before the close of the exhibition, and artists cannot substitute another work or raise the sales price after acceptance.
