The Artist as Quiltmaker XX: FAVA's 20th Biennial Contemporary Quilt Exhibition

The Artist as Quiltmaker is the second longest running art quilt exhibition in the world. FAVA deliberately chooses not to define 'quilt,' thereby encouraging both established and emerging artists to submit innovative artwork—pushing boundaries and challenging expectations—whether they use traditional or non-traditional techniques or materials.

The AQM XX Juror is Petra Fallaux, an artist, curator, and writer based in Pittsburgh, PA. She regularly writes articles for Art Quilt Quarterly, Fiber Art Now and catalogue essays for notable quilt artists. She currently co-curates the Springboard Gallery in Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood.

Entry Deadline: March 1, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Entry fee is $40.00. Artists living in the U.S. or Canada may submit up to three pieces for consideration. Work must be completed within the last 5 years and may not have been shown at FAVA previously. Innovative two- and three-dimensional quilts are eligible. Artwork must be an original design/concept and not created in a class or workshop. Student work is acceptable if created outside the classroom and without an instructor's guidance. Maximum height or width is 108". Collaborative works are eligible.

Jurying will be from digital images only. Two-dimensional entries should have two images: one overall image and one detail, clearly labeled. Three-dimensional entries should have three images: one overall image, one detail and one additional full-image view. Image file format: JPEG or JPG only. File dimensions: 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side. File size: under 5 MB. Jurying Dates: March 2 - March 31. Artists will be notified of jury results by email or phone by April 1, 2024. Exhibition Dates: May 11 - July 7, 2024. Reception & Awards Announcement: Saturday, June 22, 1-3 p.m. Round-trip transit insurance and shipping costs to Oberlin are the responsibility of the artist. FAVA will insure the work for 70 percent of its fair market value while the work is under its care. FAVA will retain a 40 percent commission on all sales. Payment for quilts sold will be sent to the artists no later than 30 days after the close of the exhibition. Return of unsold artwork: July 26, 2024.
