About This Call
The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway is a community-driven, collaboratively funded public art project seeking artist(s) to create durable, permanent way-finding artworks that connect multiple sites across the pathway. The project aims to create a physical place for remembrance and reflection, utilize technology to share stories about HIV/AIDS and community responses to the crisis, and provide a call to action to end HIV/AIDS, stigma, and discrimination.
The pathway is divided into three major segments: "Honoring Community Courage and Resilience" in the Community Room, "Celebrating Creativity & Life" in the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Plaza, and "Remembrance & Reflection" in Cal Anderson Park. Artists are asked to create artworks that act as way-finding elements and "connective tissue" across multiple sites, helping visitors navigate from transit entrances through the plaza to Cal Anderson Park. The artworks will be located at points along the pathway to identify art zones and guide individuals toward them. They may also serve as anchor points for a future Augmented Reality platform.
Artists and art teams are encouraged to work within universal design principles to support accessibility for people with sensory and mobility challenges. Suggested media include gateways, sculptures, elevated or suspended installations, engraved or embedded art, light art, sound/audio art, sculptural towers/columns (metal, ceramic, or glass), and embedded art elements on benches, sidewalks, or roadways. Opportunities exist for incorporating artworks in the Nagle Place Extension, TOD plaza (including step-seating, benches, and floor paving), Denny Festival Street (including creative crosswalks), and Cal Anderson Park. Artworks must not impede planned plaza activities such as farmers markets or detract from The AMP Centerpiece artwork. Work sample requirements: 0-15 images. National eligibility.
