About This Call
The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway is a community-driven, collaboratively-funded public art project with goals to create a physical place for remembrance and reflection, utilize technology to share stories about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and diverse community responses, and provide a call to action to end HIV/AIDS, stigma, and discrimination. The project's guiding principles include creating places for remembrance and reflection, conveying a sense of place through history and community values, telling the stories of HIV/AIDS in Seattle/King County, providing calls to action for advocacy and support, supporting racial equity and inclusivity, and ensuring the continuation of the project.
This call seeks an artist or artist team to create a durable, permanent centerpiece artwork sited in a central plaza behind the Sound Transit link light rail station on Capitol Hill at Broadway and John streets, near the southern wall of the station's vent shaft tower. The tower rises approximately 40 feet high and 30 feet wide. The artwork may be a two- or three-dimensional piece, including light installation, video/media arts, projection, digital billboard, mural, bas-relief, or sculpture. The artwork will likely require a minimum three and a half feet clearance in front of the vent shaft wall and be supported by a separate structure. Any light-based or media-based artwork must also have a daytime element and presence. Electric and water outlets can be made available by the developer if identified early in the proposal process.
The selected artist/artist team will receive a $300,000 USD commission to design, fabricate, and install the artwork, inclusive of all travel, taxes, and other expenses. The project contractor will provide additional in-kind engineering and construction support. This call is open to professional artists around the world; students are not eligible. Application requirements include a letter of interest or audio/video statement (not to exceed 1.5 minutes), fifteen artwork images with identification list, a résumé (no longer than two pages), and three professional references. Selection will be based on artistic quality, demonstrated experience working with design teams, history of growth as an artist, commitment to project values, ability to think conceptually, and strength of the letter of interest.
