About This Call

The Neddy at Cornish is an annual artist award program supported by the Behnke Foundation and housed at Cornish College of the Arts. The program honors Robert E. ("Ned") Behnke's legacy as an artist and his passion for the arts. Each year, two $25,000 unrestricted awards are given—one in painting and one in any medium or combination of media grounded in the visual arts—to artists living and working in the greater Puget Sound region. Six finalists will also receive $1,500 and will be included in a group exhibition in September.

Eligibility: Artists must be full-time residents of Washington State in the greater Puget Sound region (Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, Skagit, San Juan, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom counties) and U.S. citizens. Artists must be 18 years or older, currently active with an ongoing pattern of producing and presenting work, and cannot be previous award recipients. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate degree programs are not eligible.

Award criteria focus on demonstrated commitment to and ongoing development of artistic vision, and demonstrated engagement with the world through art practice. A panel of three regional arts professionals will review applications and select eight finalists (four painters and four open medium artists). A single juror from outside the region will conduct studio visits with finalists (July 31-August 3, 2014) and select the two award recipients. All eight finalists will be featured in a group exhibition, documentary video, and reception in September 2014. Work sample requirements: 10-15 total samples (0-15 images, 0-6 audio files, 0-6 video files). Applications must be submitted online by April 20, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Contact: [email protected] or (206) 726-5116.
