Terrazzo Art Medallions - Nashville International Airport

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) and Arts at the Airport (AaA) invite artists and artist-teams living in the U.S. to submit proposals for the design of two separate terrazzo floor medallions in the Terminal Lobby of Nashville International Airport (BNA). The medallions will be located at the Node in the A/B connector area (23'8" diameter) and the Node in the C/D connector area (16'0" diameter). The design fee budget is $35,000 for each Node. Selected artists/teams will work with a Terrazzo Floor Company during fabrication and installation to ensure design integrity. Project installation will occur in summer 2021.

The terrazzo will be 3/8" epoxy resin with no color restrictions other than what is achievable with the medium. Artists should understand terrazzo's properties, available colors through various aggregates (stone, metal, shells, glass, mirror, etc.), and how colors are controlled using metal strips. The primary goals are to create visually stimulating, impactful, and memorable designs that express inspiration from Nashville, Middle Tennessee, BNA, and aviation; design specifically for the airport environment; and enhance the existing Arts at the Airport public art collection.

Eligibility: Open to U.S.-based artists and artist-teams who have successfully completed at least one art commission (public or private) within the past five years. Prior terrazzo floor design/installation experience is preferred but not mandatory. Applicants must provide evidence of prior commissions through resumes, photographs, and references. Current MNAA employees, commissioners, and Arts at the Airport Board members may not apply. Submissions must include: statement of interest (one page), current resume (two pages), images of past work (three) with descriptions, proposed design images for the terrazzo floor (four), and three professional references.
