About This Call

New Jersey Transit and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts present the Temporary Transit Art (TTA) Program Newark Pilot. This opportunity is open for proposals from artists who have received a Fellowship through the Arts Council's Individual Artist Fellowship program, and/or Arts Council Folk Arts Masters and Apprentices, and are current residents of the State of New Jersey.

Qualified artists are encouraged to submit a proposal for a temporary art project in a Newark New Jersey Transit space. Artists should submit a plan that is clear, concise and considerate of the ridership and public nature of temporary art in transit spaces. Because Transit spaces are comprised of a variety of public, restricted and strictly safety-regulated areas, some project proposals may require changes in order to be approved. The New Jersey Transit Temporary Transit Art Selection Committee will review each application and respond to the artist with either an approval, a tentative approval with conditions for required changes, or a denial. Only one proposal per artist may be submitted. No extensions to the deadline will be granted.

Applications must be submitted no later than Midnight on Sunday, June 9th via www.callforentry.org. Artist submissions should include a narrative of no more than two pages (10 point font or larger, 1.5 spaced) describing the project, its scope and the artist's desired outcomes. Include the basic who, what, when, where and how in this narrative. Submissions must be accompanied by a proposed budget, inclusive of all known costs and required resources. The State Arts Council will provide a stipend to the artist of $1000 per project, which can be used toward project costs and artistic fees as needed. New Jersey Transit may provide additional equipment and in-kind services such as chairs for audiences, printing of posters and banners, marketing and promotional costs, access to a projector, speakers, podium, and microphone.

Artists will be notified of the outcomes of their submission in early August. Temporary Transit Art projects will be scheduled beginning in September 2019. Proposals will be evaluated based on artistic excellence, potential for positive experiences or interactions with NJ Transit riders, safety considerations, and feasibility of the project as proposed or with minor changes. Artists who are successful will retain any materials or artifacts from the work and are responsible for cleanup and removal within 24 hours after the exhibition or performance.
