About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking artist(s) for its Temporary Public Art program. Four selected sculptural pieces will be located on concrete pads along the trail system. Sculptures will be displayed on temporary loan for three years, creating a rotating collection of public art. The budget for this project is $5,000 per artist. This call for entry is requesting a maximum of one sculpture for consideration per artist.

Sculpture specifications: Must be an original design suitable for viewing by all ages. Sculptures can be of any medium but must be able to withstand outside, uncovered weather conditions and resist theft, vandalism, and excessive maintenance costs. Sculptures must fit on pre-determined concrete pads measuring 120" by 120" with a usable corner-to-corner space of 96" by 96". Height must be no less than 6' and no more than 15' (excluding the base). Sculptures must weigh no more than 3,000 pounds and be installed with sufficient anchoring to prevent removal, tipping, breaking, or overturning due to wind or earthquake. All sculptures must be designed with tabs or other anchorage devices to secure the artwork to the concrete pads. Power is not available onsite; if required, solar components are suggested. Artwork must comply with standard engineering practices, ADA standards, and must not present a hazard to public safety. An artist plaque will be displayed on or near the artwork.

Eligibility: Artists 18 years of age or older are invited to submit individual or collaborative applications. Work sample requirements: minimum 5 images, maximum 10 images; up to 6 audio files and 6 video files permitted; total samples between 5 and 15. Required submission materials include artist statement, resume or CV, proposed sculpture description (including materials, dimensions, previously shown locations and dates if applicable, and maintenance requirements), and portfolio images. The $5,000 honorarium is provided for a three-year period, with the City collecting a 25% commission on artwork sold during that period. Artists are responsible for design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, pick-up, installation instructions, maintenance guide, travel, hotel accommodations, and insurance coverage for the installation period. Application deadline: June 5, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selections made by Artist Selection Committee in June/July 2020, with Arts Commission and City Council review in August 2020 and artist notification in September 2020.
