About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking original sculpture designs for its Temporary Public Art – Trailhead Project. Sculptures will be installed on concrete pads located throughout the city's trail system, which spans more than 9,000 acres of open space and 100 miles of trails designed for walking, riding, jogging, and skating.
Sculptures must be 6' to 15' in height (excluding base), weigh no more than 3,000 pounds, and fit on a 96" by 96" concrete pad with a usable corner-to-corner space of 72" by 72". Artists should consider site-specificity and response to the landscape. Sculptures must be suitable for all ages, original designs, and constructed of durable materials that can withstand desert weather conditions (high winds and extreme temperatures). No power is available onsite; if power is required, a solar component is suggested. Artists must provide installation drawings and instructions from a California-licensed engineer, a maintenance guide, and design the sculpture with tabs or anchorage devices for secure installation.
Selected artists will receive a $5,000 honorarium for a three-year period, plus an additional $1,500 stipend to cover three-year insurance costs and $2,000 to cover engineering fees. The City will collect a 25% commission on artwork sold during the three-year period. Artists are responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, installation, insurance, and maintenance costs, as well as delivery and pick-up of artwork. A contract will be executed prior to installation. Applicants must be 18 years or older with a US mailing address and submit a W-9 form. Application materials include a resume/CV, up to five images of proposed artwork, five examples of previous work, and a written description including materials, dimensions, previous exhibition history, and maintenance requirements.
