About This Call
The Basalt Public Arts Commission (BPAC) invites Colorado artists to creatively unite Basalt's neighborhoods, roads, and paths with public art. Installation(s) will open to the public in June 2017, accompanied by a kickoff celebratory event. This is the first of a series of temporary projects expressing the theme: "discover what connects our community."
The installation may be a single statement, a few objects, or many repeating elements that might be clustered or aligned. They may be found or recycled objects. They may add a unifying color, add light, invoke the river as metaphor, or create a serpentine thread through the Basalt community, which may include areas along the Roaring Fork and Fryingpan rivers, Highway 82, and/or Rio Grande (old railroad alignment, which is now a trail). The installations could encourage locals and visitors to walk and bike, search and seek out different aspects of the installation and the Town. BPAC is also open to a non-physical project uniting the community in a common experience, for example, along waterways and walkways.
The budget for this project is $50,000 (all-inclusive: design, fabrication, installation, deinstallation, and travel). Professional visual artists at least 18 years of age residing in Colorado are eligible to apply. Full-time, permanent Town of Basalt employees, sub-consultants, and BPAC members are ineligible. Three finalists will be selected and each will receive $500 to develop project proposals. The winner will be recommended to the Basalt Town Council for approval and awarded a contract. Town Council must also approve proposed locations for installations. The artist will retain ownership of the installation once removed.
