About This Call

Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division and Downtown Santa Monica Inc. are partnering to present an ongoing and rotating series of temporary art installations that will activate public spaces and invite the community to explore the Colorado Esplanade and the Promenade from Colorado Ave. to Wilshire Blvd. A pool of artists will be identified to develop proposals for temporary artworks to be installed in downtown Santa Monica between July 2017 and September 2018.

Two distinct opportunities are available. Opportunity A involves large-scale temporary installations at Triangle Square (located at Third St. and Colorado Blvd.), with at least four installations on view for one to twelve months depending on installation type and materials. Each installation has a budget ranging between $15,000 and $20,000. Opportunity B consists of episodic artworks, interventions, and projections along the 3rd Street Promenade from Triangle Square to Wilshire Blvd., including still images, videos, lighting designs, and physical interventions. Four to ten artists or artist teams will be commissioned, each receiving a working budget up to $6,000. Artists may apply for both opportunities simultaneously if they have previous work demonstrating capability for both sites.

This is a national call open to all professional artists and artist teams living in the United States. Previous experience in public art is highly desirable but not required. Preference may be given to Southern California based artists. Submissions must include a brief letter of interest describing qualifications and any previous public art projects, a professional resume, and up to ten images of relevant past work in digital format. No original artwork or proposals are requested at this time. Selected artists will be required to meet City of Santa Monica and Downtown Santa Monica insurance requirements and sign an indemnification letter. The submission deadline is May 5, 2017 at 11:59 PM Mountain Time. For additional information, contact Danielle Garza at [email protected].
