About This Call

The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery invites artists ages 13-17 to submit portraits for the third annual Teen Portrait Competition. This juried competition accepts work in painting, drawing, photography, and video. The grand-prize portrait will be printed and displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in 2016.

The competition was designed by local teenagers ages 13-17 working with the museum's education department to introduce peers to the concept of 'for teens, by teens' through portraiture. The theme for entries is "interact and interaction," exploring the mutual or reciprocal action and influence between the sitter and spectator, as well as interaction with setting, self, others, or experience.

Eligible artists must be between 13 and 17 years old and may be from anywhere in the United States. Submissions must include a minimum of 1 work sample (either 1 image or 1 video). Contact Blair Kirkbaumer, Teen Programs Coordinator, at [email protected] with questions.
