About This Call

The Tech + Art Exhibit explores applications of technology in the creation and experience of art. Technology in art refers to the production of arts using technical processes, methods, or knowledge; the application of technology to produce novel visual imagery and sound; and the broadening of the viewer's participation in the artistic experience. The exhibit invites creating and manipulating objects, images, sound, text, music, voice, and movement in tandem with custom-written software, emerging materials, unconventional processes, and new methods of integration with other technologies and fields of practice. Examples include virtual reality, experimental visualization and fabrication, new materials and processes, interactive and kinetic art, responsive environments, bio art, and embodied networks that alter thinking, perception, and creative processes. Technology is interpreted widely; artists using technologies in traditional art processes such as drawing, painting, photography, collage, assemblage, and installation are welcome. Examples might include the use of computer-generated designs in painting, kinetic sculpture, innovative photographic processes, and data visualization in any medium.

This year's juror is Brett Ian Balogh, faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Brett is a Chicago-based artist working at the intersection of objects, sounds, and spaces, teaching courses in new media, architecture, digital fabrication, radio, and sound. He has exhibited and performed at P.S.1 (NY), Diapason (NY), Devotion Gallery (NY), The MCA (Chicago), and The Hyde Park Arts Center (Chicago), among others.

Entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Work samples must include a minimum of 1 and maximum of 3 total samples, which may consist of images (1-3), audio files (0-3), or video files (0-3). Works must be original within the previous two years and must not have been previously shown in any competition at the Ann Arbor Art Center. The submission deadline is June 28, 2015 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. The exhibition runs July 24 - September 6, 2015. Awards include Best of Show ($500), Second Place ($200), Third Place ($100), and two Honorable Mentions. Drop-off deadline is July 19; installation is July 20-23; opening reception is July 24. Pick-up of work is September 7-8. Works may be hand-delivered or shipped via UPS or Parcel Post; artists are responsible for all shipping and return shipping costs, including insurance.
