About This Call
The Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council (TASHCO), as administrator of the City of Thornton's Public Art Program, is seeking to commission a highly innovative, large-scale outdoor artwork for Margaret Carpenter Park Amphitheater (3498 E 112th Ave, Thornton, CO 80233). The artwork should have a strong visual impact and identify the city's amphitheater, which hosts dance performances, summer concerts, community band performances, outdoor theater, and family events, serving over one hundred thousand people annually.
Designs must show innovation in material use, spatial consideration, and contextual applications. The project design should include the back wall of the stage area (9 feet tall, 70 feet long), though artworks are not limited to the back wall. No artworks shall block or obstruct maintenance or traffic areas. The stage is 50 x 25 feet, with an ADA ramp 5 feet wide, a side walk 9 feet by 35 feet long, and an area in front of the stage 84 feet by 24 feet. Designs must be visually appealing in both day and evening hours, demonstrate creative use of materials and content, and withstand all seasons. Durable, low-maintenance materials are recommended. Artwork should activate the area by drawing people in and encouraging gathering and socializing when events are not in motion. Designs should reflect the multitude of uses and account for filming and photography at events.
The selected artist will be awarded $2,000 for the design. Production and installation will be budgeted and contracted separately. Eligibility is open to all Colorado artists and artist teams, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Preference will be given to those with previous large-scale mural project experience and a connection to the Thornton community. Artists must demonstrate a history of large-scale public artwork project experience and provide references. City of Thornton employees are not eligible. Work samples should include 5-15 images, 0-6 audio files, and 0-6 video files. Application deadline: January 31, 2018 at 5 p.m. MST. Artists will be notified of status by February 28, 2018. Contact Krystle Codrey at [email protected] or 720-977-5882.
