About This Call

The Tale Trail Project Mural is one element of a collaboration between the City of Keller's Public Arts Board, Parks and Recreation, and Library Departments. The project aims to provide an educational activity for families to spend time together in an outdoor setting with self-directed, experimental, and content-rich early learning. The City will install a "tale trail" with 20 plaques containing pages from a children's story along a popular walking route in Keller, along with colorful thermoplastic coating, whimsical sculptures, seating areas, and ornamental greenery. The mural will serve as the terminus of the trail and gathering space. The project is anticipated to begin in early 2023.

The mural theme is wildflowers. Artists may reference the children's book Miss Rumphius written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. The mural must be original design with a lifespan of at least 10 years, covering 99% of the wall space (201" width x 148" height). The mural must be low maintenance, weather, vandal, and graffiti resistant. Artists shall add brick primer coat and anti-aging coating and use acrylic paint (substitutions must be approved by the Board). Content must be appropriate for all ages; designs that are vulgar, politically polarized, contain profanity or offensive language or symbols, advertising, soliciting, or copyrighted materials will not be considered. The City of Keller will provide a 4"x6" plaque for the mural to include artwork title, artist name, and year of installation.

The selected artist will receive $14,500, inclusive of artist's fees, materials, fabrication, onsite installation, and travel. One-half of the honorarium will be paid upon execution of contract, and the second half will be disbursed after the mural is completed and approved by the Board. Eligible artists must reside in Texas. Applications may be submitted by a group of artists, though specific contractual obligations may apply. Submit 3-5 images of work samples.
